Title: Some Recent Gems in AI Theory

Abstract: Theoretical thinking has always played a pivotal role in the progress of artificial intelligence. In this talk we discuss some recent examples of fresh theory thinking which either notably improves data sample efficiency, offers insights into large model scaling, or succeeds in applying AI to other sciences.

BIO: 姚期智(Andrew Chi-Chih Yao),2000年ACM图灵奖得主,美国科学院院士,美国科学与艺术学院院士,中国科学院外籍院士,ACM/IACR Fellow,世界著名计算机学家。他于1967年获台湾大学物理学士学位,1972年获美国哈佛大学物理博士学位,1975年获美国伊利诺依大学计算机科学博士学位。1975年至1986年间,先后在美国麻省理工学院数学系、斯坦福大学计算机系、加利福尼亚大学伯克利分校计算机系任助理教授和教授。从1986年至2004年,在普林斯顿大学计算机科学系任William/Edna Macaleer工程与应用科学教授。2004年起在清华大学任全职教授,现为清华大学交叉科学研究院院长。因其对计算理论包括伪随机数生成、密码学与通信复杂度的突出贡献,荣获2000年度ACM图灵奖。此外,他还获得1987年波里亚奖(George Polya Prize)、1996年高德纳奖(Donald E. Knuth Prize)及2003年潘文渊研究奖(Pan Wen-Yuan Foundation Research Award)等诸多荣誉和奖项。

Keynote: The Future of Computer Science

Abstract: Computer Science is changing. During my career, it was focused on making computers useful. Today computers are useful and the focus is on what they are being used for. This talk will be on computer science theory that will be important in the future.

BIO:John Hopcroft is the IBM Professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics in Computer Science at Cornell University. After receiving both his M.S. (1962) and Ph.D. (1964) in electrical engineering from Stanford University, he spent three years on the faculty of Princeton University. He joined the Cornell faculty in 1967, was named professor in 1972 and the Joseph C. Ford Professor of Computer Science in 1985. He was honored with the ACM Turing Award in 1986. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the IEEE, and the ACM. In 1992, he was appointed by President Bush to the National Science Board, which oversees the National Science Foundation, and served through May 1998. In addition to these appointments, Hopcroft serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the David and Lucile Packard Fellowships in Science and Engineering, the SIAM financial management committee, IIIT New Delhi advisory board, Microsoft's technical advisory board for research Asia, the Engineering Advisory Board, Seattle University, and the program committee for Chile Millennium Science Initiative.

Song-Chun Zhu

The dean of the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence

BIO: Song Chun Zhu is a globally well-known Computer Vision scientist, Statistician and Applied Mamathematician, and artificial intelligence expert. In 1991, he earned his B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Science and Technology of China. In 1996 he got his PhD in Computer Science under David Mumford's supervision, Fields Medal Winner, American National Medal of Science Winner, and the International Mathematical Union's former president. He has published more than 300 papers in top international journals and conferences, has won the Marr Prize, the top award in the Computer Vision field, three times, and has twice served as the general chair for the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Cognition (CVPR) in 2012 and 2019. He contributed significantly to cognitive science, such as visual common sense reasoning and scene understanding. Since 2010, he twice served as Principal Investigator for Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) program, which supported research teams whose research efforts intersect the Vision, Cognitive Science and AI fields. He has a strong foresight in scientific research and ultra-sensitive olfaction on scientific research direction and methodology. Moreover, he has committed to formulating a unifying framework for Computer Vision, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence. In 2002, Zhu joined UCLA, served as a professor in the Department of Statistics and Computer Science, and became the Director of the UCLA Center for Vision, Cognition, Learning and Autonomy Director. In September 2020, he returned to China and established Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence, serving as founding dean. He was appointed the dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence at Peking University and the Institute for Artificial Intelligence at Peking University. He serves as a Chair professor for both Peking University and Tsinghua University.

研究领域为应用数学。在数学、应用数学、物理、化学、力学等领域的顶级会议上应邀作过邀请报告。
2003年获国际工业与应用数学协会科拉兹奖。2009年获美国工业与应用数学学会克来曼奖。2014年获美国工业与应用数学学会卡门奖。2019 年获得 美国工业与应用数学学会和ETH 共同颁发的Henrici Prize. 2020年获ACM Gordon Bell Prize.

BIO:David Mumford (Born in 1937) is an internationally renowned mathematician known for his work in algebraic geometry, computer vision, and the study of pattern theory. He has won Fields Medal, Wolf Medal, MacArthur Genius Award and other awards, and in 2010 he was awarded the National Medal of Science (equivalent to the highest national science and technology award in China). He is currently a University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mathematics at Harvard University and the Department of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. During his tenure as the chairman of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) from 1995 to 1998, he promoted the holding of the 2002 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Beijing, and he has long-term attention and research on the history and culture of China's science and technology.
